The idea behind the heart
The Eberhardje is named after former mayor Eberhard van der Laan. His farewell message inspired Résalieke Vlieger to come up with the idea for a biscuit, which she developed with Ineke Kuiper.
Nico Meijles of Holtkamp Horeca Patisserie en Croquetten helped turn the idea into a biscuit. On 5 May 2018, the first Eberhardjes were served during the Freedom Meal for Lieve Amsterdammers beneath the arches of the Rijksmuseum.
“Take good care of our city and of each other.”
In his farewell message to the people of Amsterdam (translated from Dutch)
An Amsterdam connection you can point to
The heart-shaped butter biscuit carries the three St Andrew’s crosses. According to Eberhardjes, butter and a hint of vanilla are part of its flavour. Shape, name and story together give you a recognisable connection to the city to share over coffee.
The team works from a message of care for the city and its people. Stichting Hart voor je stad funds activities and projects that connect people in Amsterdam. The Eberhardjes Amsterdam foundation contributes to that funding. Current projects can be found on Eberhardjes’ own website.
The connection with Amsterdam Gift Studio
Bob Lei, owner of Amsterdam Gift Studio, is an Eberhardjes partner for special enquiries. Through Bob, AGS has a personal connection to the people behind the biscuit. We have been an Eberhardjes partner from the very beginning. We donate 15% of our margin on every Eberhardje we sell to Stichting Hart voor je stad.
In our selection, Eberhardjes suit moments when people meet: a reception, a treat at the office or a thank-you. We consider how you want to give the gift and the message you want to share. The biscuit then comes with a story you can pass on to the recipient.
